Ajax File Browser 2.0.1

This release fixes a critical login problem. Although the feature requests for AFB are so many, I've held off implementing any more of them until the next major release (which is due soon, fingers crossed).

New Yahoo! Mail Beta

Yahoo! Mail Beta is a web-based email application that combines the rich, responsive interface of a desktop program with the available-from-anywhere convenience of your existing Yahoo! Mail account.

Benefits of Yahoo! Mail Beta include:

* Drag and drop messages into folders for better organization

* A preview pane makes it easier to read your messages

* Speedier Ajax-interface

* Keyboard shortcuts such as Ctrl-S to save a message

* Navigate from message to message with the arrow keys

* Messages open in tabs or new windows so you can multitask

Yahoo! Mail Beta doesn't work in Opera (GMail does), it's pretty fast, loads faster than GMail, but you don't have the feeling you're using a desktop client. For example, scrolling the list of messages takes some time, you have to wait a couple of seconds after you select a message (you only see: "Loading message...").

The built-in RSS reader works very good, it imports your feeds from My Yahoo, but you can't categorize them or move them, you can't export your subscriptions into OPML.

As described on Google Blog

Meebo! The web based IM

Meebo is a web based IM that lets you log into your IM networks from any computer with a browser and internet connection with no firewall issues.

It employs technologies (like AJAX) to make it act more like a desktop application, which dramatically improves usability.

Many users enjoy the benefits of a native DHTML application, as it does not consume as many system resources as a Java applet (such as ICQ2Go or Yahoo Web Messenger).

Some users are also experimenting with setting meebo as their Active Desktop page to use meebo like a native Windows application for their instant-messaging purposes.

So Go Meebo!

Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real on Discovery

Premieres 6 August, 8pm

Throughout human history, people have been fascinated with dragons, which have appeared in the myths and legends of almost every world culture – the Inuit, the Aztecs and the Chinese, to name a few. These people never connected, yet all of them conceived of the same mythical animal. Working with production crews from around the world and collaborating with top scientists, artists and animators, Discovery Channel’s new special combines legend, scientific fact and theory, CGI animation and cutting-edge special effects to bring dragons to life in Dragons: A Fantasy Made Real.

Using stunning computer-generated imagery from the same graphics company that made creatures for the Discovery Channel’s Walking with Dinosaurs and Walking with Prehistoric Beasts, as well as the Harry Potter films, viewers see dragons from the inside out. The special imagines how dragons would have evolved into a number of different species through the ages and around the globe, and how each dragon species was endowed with physical adaptations and behaviors specialized for its environment. In this story, dragons find a mate, raise young, protect their territory and struggle to survive human encroachment, just as animals have done throughout history.

Repeat Airings :
7 August, 3 pm
9 August, 9 am
10 August, 8 pm
12 August, 5 pm
13 August, 11 am

Firefox 200 Million Downloads

Today the Firefox download counter crossed the 200 million mark.

We know that this number doesn't represent actual users because this number includes both Firefox 1.0 and Firefox 1.5 (soon Firefox 2,) because not every one completes every download, and because not every download results in a new Firefox user.

That being said, 200 million people seeking Firefox is a huge accomplishment and we're right to celebrate our role in driving that number.

Microsoft to invest $150 mn in Pune

Microsoft is set to pump in $150 million (Rs 702.84 crore) in a mega software development centre in Pune, according to Arvind Kumar, IT secretary, government of Maharashtra.

When announced, this will be the single biggest IT investment coming into the city so far. TCS recently announced an investment of Rs 500 crore for Pune.

"This is only the beginning. We are hard selling Maharashtra to every possible MNC," Kumar said on Wednesday. He said the Microsoft investment would be announced soon and that it would be outside the Hinjewadi IT Park.

Kumar said the state is also in discussions with other multinational IT companies like Hewlett Packard and IBM to bring in their future investments into the state.

Senior state government officials recently met a delegation from IBM and laid out the red carpet to them, he said. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a meeting organised by CSI in Pune, Kumar said: "It's time we got out of the office and sold the state to these big IT investors."

"In fact, the state has thrown open its gates and is wooing investors in the sector, trying to offer them whatever they ask for," he said.

Later, at a meeting organised by MCCIA, Kumar said Intel and Advanced Micro Devices were also on the state's list of invitees.

According to him, these hardware majors will also be given the same fiscal benefits as the software ones. Kumar said a proposal to see if free land could be granted to investors in tier II and III cities, if not Mumbai and Pune, was being considered.

The cities being promoted are Nashik, Aurangabad, Nagpur and Amravati.
